Last spring, I was asked to test a set of technical mountain biking apparel. At the same time, I had the pleasure of discovering and getting to know the Canadian local company Apogee Sport better. This article provides a description and my impressions of the Touareg long-sleeve jersey. But first, here's what you need to know about Apogee Sport; ABOUT APOGEEApogee Sports is a Canadian manufacturing company specializing in the design and production of high-end sports apparel. Founded in 1998, Apogee has established itself as a leader in custom sports clothing for teams and sports organizations of all levels, from local clubs to Olympic champions. Apogee prides itself on local production, with modern facilities in Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, Quebec. This proximity to local customers means greater efficiency and better quality service for them.TOUAREG LONG-SLEEVE JERSEY The Touareg jersey is designed with their ''APOGEE Elite Fit, Nano Tech''. The Italian Apogee Nano Tech fabric ensures moisture management and breathability; it's a 100% polyester Italian fabric. Most of the jersey looks like a mesh fabric, with the exception of a strip covering the upper arms and shoulders. This makes it extremely lightweight and, most importantly, breathable.This jersey has long, ergonomic sleeves with narrower cuffs. The fit at the cuffs allows the jersey to stay close to the body without being too tight. However, I can't really roll up my sleeves very high if I want to. That's a reflex I often have with my long-sleeve jersey when I get hot. But here, the Touareg Long Sleeve is so breathable that it's not necessary.There's a small side pocket on the bottom right, with a YKK vislon zipper. You can store cards, gels, or bars there if you wish. It's not something I particularly use, but I know it can always be useful when you want to ride as lightly as possible.Even though it's a long-sleeve jersey, it's ideal for sunny summer days. In addition to being super-breathable, it offers UPF 50 sun protection. Finally, I hate shirt collars that are too high. This one, on the Touareg long-sleeve jersey, is perfect. The design of their MTB collection jersey features a comfortable MTB roll-neck collar.TO CONCLUDEI must admit I was a little surprised by the size I had to take to be comfortable. I usually wear between two sizes, medium and large. It generally depends on the brand and size.

Aluminum vs. Carbon: In a flash...

Cycling is a very diverse discipline. The growing offer of different materials allows to please an infinite number of needs and preferences. Here we briefly and objectively examine the general characteristics of carbon and aluminum wheels. Carbon fiber wheels and their construction technology have gained a lot of ground in the bicycle industry in recent years. The characteristics that strike at first glance: their "look" and then... their price! But what then? Indeed, when it comes to comparing the construction materials of bicycle components (as in a forum thread for example) things quickly become polarized, because they are both nuanced and often subjective! Before clicking on the next Facebook thread, enlighten your choice according to your preferences and needs here. Warning: Both will meet your needs - even the most individual ones. The aluminum wheel As you know, they have existed for a long time and construction techniques are well established, although constantly evolving. Alloy rims are formed and welded very quickly by automated processes and are therefore mass produced in factories. These latter characteristics largely explain why they are much less expensive than their counterparts, generally half the MSRP!   Features and maintenance The alloy shows warning signs before failure, making it easier to detect damage. Generally, a small visual inspection of your rims can tell you a lot about their condition and how to remedy it. First, alloy rims tend to have more flexibility. Compared to carbon wheels, alloy wheels therefore tend to deform or "warp" upon impact. The accumulation of shocks produces a warning sign: the rim starts to rub against one or even both brake pads. Riding with a warped wheel affects the riding comfort of the bike and its behavior in sharp turns at higher speeds. Fortunately, the malleable quality of aluminum also makes it possible to straighten it (by a qualified technician). Finally, advances in the quality of metal rim alloys make the formation of corrosion (rust) very rare. What is more frequent is an accumulation of rubber residue from the brake pads. This latter will affect the braking efficiency of the brake pads against the rim more than the integrity of your rim, however. A quick wipe after your rides (especially when rainy) will be a foolproof remedy to avoid this detail! Performance and Feel Due to the inherent flexibility of the metal alloy, aluminum rims offer a smoother ride and absorb more impacts from stones or cracks in the road. Warning: a good Quebec pothole will make your wrists (and your backside) scream regardless of the wheel, however! Although the evolution of the aluminum wheel has allowed it to lose many grams over the years, given comparable data to a carbon fiber wheel (wheel diameter, hub type, spoke count, riding application, etc.), aluminum wheels are inevitably heavier.   The cost A quality aluminum wheel costs around $600 to $1500.   The carbon fiber wheel Carbon components certainly have obvious advantages. It is a material that has half the density of aluminum, but is more rigid. In addition, the often aerodynamic profile of a carbon rim automatically gives it a more racy, not to say "racing" look. Compared to aluminum, a multi-step process and specialized labor are required to manufacture a single carbon fiber rim. The improvement and refinement of its construction technology is in continuous development, but know that carbon wheels for road bikes and even mountain bikes are more reliable than they have ever been!   Features and maintenance To ensure reliable wheels, manufacturers use several layers of carbon, where the orientation given to each layer of fibers is strategically placed relative to the previous layer, allowing the characteristics of the final result to be manipulated. This superposition of multiple layers is what gives carbon wheels their ultra-rigid nature and their high performance capability. Unlike alloy wheels, a more thorough inspection of a carbon rim is required to identify early signs of maintenance or replacement. With an equal amount of impact or significant stress, unlike the alloy wheel, the carbon rim will not warp. It requires significant trauma to generate a reaction induced by excessive force. In this extreme situation, the reaction of the carbon rim will be to crack. A visible crack, regardless of its width and length, represents a situation that requires a replacement of the rim, as it cannot be straightened or repaired. A second risk extends over a much longer term, if the carbon wheel is well maintained and undergoes few significant impacts, it will not show visible signs of fatigue on the surface. In very rare occasions, this appearance of construction integrity can create surprises. This rigid nature has benefits, notably the carbon rim remains "true" without the need for truing. As such, carbon wheels (when well built) are less likely to deform quickly when used frequently, even on aggressive terrain. This means they won't see the mechanic as often, which has its own recurring cost!   Performance and Feel: As we've been saying from the start, carbon wheels are much stiffer than alloy wheels for the same weight. A stiffer wheel will allow for more precise steering, a more responsive bike under acceleration and pedaling forces, and better line tracking when you push the bike harder into turns. The stiffness of the rims allows the cyclist to maintain speed while expending less energy, due to the limitation of power leaks absorbed by the wheels. This primary characteristic of stiffness is also one of the reasons why many cyclists preferred aluminum wheels when carbon first entered the market: the rims were far too stiff. Since then, rims have been developed so that carbon fiber acts differently in different directions. This development allows engineers to design rims that are stiff in one specific direction, but can remain compliant in another direction. The challenge of high performance with good ride quality has therefore been to combine lateral stiffness with vertical compliance. The result allows all the performance advantages of a stiff wheel to be retained, while offering more shock absorption for a more pleasant ride. Most modern carbon wheels absorb shocks and vibrations so well that they equal or surpass the ride quality of aluminum wheels! The wattage developed by pushing on the pedals is not the only value ensuring a higher travel speed. On a bicycle, rotating weight counts more than other types of weight. In this way, weight at the rim has a greater effect than weight located at a more central location, such as the hub for example. Consequently, the weight savings between comparable aluminum and carbon wheels are multiplied when riding the bike. More than any other component exchange, exchanging wheels will have a significant impact on the bike's behavior. With lighter carbon fiber wheels, acceleration and power transfer are more immediate and the bike generally feels more lively.Finally, carbon wheels will always be more expensive than wheels with comparable alloy characteristics, largely due to the processes required for their construction. Their rigid and less absorbent characteristics can make long rides less comfortable for less experienced cyclists. As compensation, a tubular tire can offer a solution for this element, but let's stick to the same topic!   The cost While we mention a window between $600 and $1500 for alloy wheels, the window for carbon wheels is more between $1500 and $2500.   Conclusion: should you opt for carbon or aluminum wheels? New standards are emerging, with many major bicycle manufacturers now including carbon wheels with their high-end models. This is true for both road and mountain bikes, and it speaks volumes about the maturity of carbon fiber rim manufacturing techniques. As with most comparisons: there is no absolute answer here and it mainly depends on what you are looking for in terms of bike behavior. Many subjective factors come into play, including the type of riding (casual riding vs. responsive and performance riding), budget, longevity, etc. It is worth noting that many carbon wheel manufacturers have introduced extended warranties, as well as replacement programs, in case of collisions with their carbon rims. It is therefore not surprising that these wheels are now commonplace, both on the road and on trails. The APOGEE Team ------------------- ADDITIONAL NOTE: It is important to keep in mind that the choice of rim material is only one element among several others when it comes to bicycle wheels. A well-built wheel using a cheaper material is generally better than a poorly built wheel with more sophisticated materials. It may be desirable to revisit the notion of "well-built" wheels in the case of carbon fiber wheels. Many experienced enthusiasts have experienced generic wheels, often produced in China among other places. The majority have learned the following lesson the hard way: beware of generic wheels, without technological or manufacturing specifications. They may have the price of an aluminum wheel, but they retain the properties of a carbon wheel. Problems arise when the intention of the purchase is performance. Because these wheels use fewer layers of fibers, with wider fibers and the combination of these two factors leads to a looser, less dense and infinitely more fragile weave. In the case of a carbon wheel, this combination of a highly rigid material and less dense manufacturing quickly leads to a crack in the rim for a much less significant impact than a quality rim. The low price is therefore not worth it, especially if you will (inevitably) have to replace it. In comparison, a good rim will be worth the investment because its price is amortized by a much better longevity.

With cycling season just around the corner, it's also that time of year when some people say: time to renew my cycling shorts! Indeed, overused cycling shorts offer less and less comfort and protection for that very personal part of the human anatomy. Without becoming an expert in the field, here are some tips to guide you on what to look for when shopping for your cycling shorts this summer. Before delving into details as precise as our ischial tuberosities on a saddle (also known as the "sit bones"), let's clarify two options you'll face: cycling shorts and "bibs" (cycling shorts with suspenders).   First, as these photos suggest, these two options will offer very different sensations during your rides. We can simply provide you with a short summary of the feedback offered for each. It's up to you to decide afterwards: Cycling shorts: Don't go as high up the back; Are therefore less warm (also depends on the manufacturer's fabrics); Sometimes slip down (depends on their size and fabric condition); Move around more (depends on their size and fabric condition);   Bib shorts:  Offer more comfort; Remain more stable thanks to the suspenders (depends on size and fabric condition) The suspenders and the extension of the shorts up the back make them warmer (also depends on the manufacturer's fabrics); Obviously, these points are not exhaustive, can be very subjective, and depend on several other factors in some cases. It becomes conceivable and essential not to be influenced by your first impression after trying on cycling shorts (or bibs) in a store. Their fit and feel are very different between standing in the changing room and sitting on a saddle. However, not all surfaces will offer the service of letting you get on a bike, and, frankly, underwear in cycling shorts defeats its entire purpose and comfort anyway! That's why when you're looking for cycling shorts and a chamois, you can keep the following two basic ideas in mind: - How your riding position can interact with the chamois. Do you ride on the road? In the mountains? The first position is more leaned forward and the second is more upright, which changes the pressure points on the saddle and your need for a more or less thick/dense chamois; and - the average duration you plan to ride during your outings. This influences the thickness and material used to make the chamois.  Indeed, each chamois pad is designed with a density adapted to ensure the best response to your comfort and protection needs, regardless of your cycling discipline. "Elastic" memory is what allows the padding to return to its original shape after being stretched, compressed, or otherwise deformed.4 - Energy absorptionWhile cycling, the interaction between your position and the activation of the muscle chains necessary for pedaling creates pressure zones on the saddle, mainly in the perineal area. A high-performance cycling chamois must protect these pressure points. The more energy a chamois can absorb, the more it will protect you.5 - Vibration dampingIn conjunction with energy absorption, continuous vibrations from the ground are transmitted through the bike, sometimes exacerbating pain at pressure points. This also helps relieve stress on the pelvic bones and back, which will improve your comfort. For points 3, 4, and 5, the classic test of pinching the chamois between your fingers can already give you a good idea of these important properties. The chamois should be relatively firm, spongy, with a soft fabric and offer resistance to the pinching action. Therefore, beware of rather thin chamois, sometimes narrower, and a feeling of a cotton ball between your fingers! If it doesn't look technical at first glance, chances are it isn't. The quick test for characteristics 3, 4, and 5 then offers you some other elements to consider and limit your margin of error! When in doubt, ask an advisor. Your bottom will thank you! 10 tips for a good start to the riding season!

  How to start your road cycling season off right Road cycling can be an enjoyable and rewarding activity, but it's important to keep a few things in mind to ensure you stay safe and comfortable. Here are 10 tips to get your road cycling season off to a good start!   1) Find a local bike shop Road cycling is your new passion, and you probably have 30 questions about it. Finding a local shop will connect you with experienced advisors who can guide you into this fantastic world. Plus, their advice can cover most of the following points in this article!   2) Ride in a group Following up on what's mentioned above, some shops also have associated cycling groups or clubs. This is the best environment to grow and learn to ride! Because, just like learning to use "clipless" pedals (more on that later), riding in a group can be quite intimidating at first since our safety bubble is very wide! However, there are now several cycling groups, clubs, or groups of all levels that meet regularly for rides. It's an ideal environment to observe, learn, and develop your skills and even peloton etiquette, at your own pace!   3) Riding without your helmet? Did you hit your head? First and foremost, it's crucial to always wear a helmet and ensure it fits properly. As a general rule, it's recommended that the front of the helmet be about two fingers' width above your eyebrows to properly protect your forehead, and that two fingers can be inserted under the chin strap. The adjustment dial at the back of your neck can be tightened until the helmet remains virtually still on your head without becoming uncomfortable. Not sure if the chin strap is tight enough? Put on and fasten your helmet. Make sure the straps are adjusted to clear your earlobes. If you feel a slight tension from the strap on your jaw when you open your mouth wide, that's a good sign! Finally, wearing eye protection is recommended for several reasons. For the purpose here, it's important to place the temple of your glasses over the strap located in front of your ear. This position will allow the glasses to eject properly in case of a collision! If the glasses cannot clear, note that the skin on the nasal bone cuts easily with the underside of a frame or lens during an impact!   4) Invest in your cycling shorts - bib shorts First point about cycling shorts: they are worn without underwear! Goodbye, undies! Next, opting for quality shorts with optimal padding, like our Elite and Super-Elite range shorts, will make all the difference in reducing discomfort during longer rides. There are also chamois creams that can be applied directly to the skin, where you typically experience pressure points. *Bonus tip: Make sure to apply the cream before putting on your shorts, in a private place – as it can be a bit awkward when done in a parking lot for all to see!* To learn more about cycling shorts, you can also read our blog post For Happy Bottoms.   5) Keep your bike in good condition If you're not comfortable taking care of your own parts and mechanics, it would be even more important to research a well-established local shop. Most shops have workshops with mechanics who will take care of your ride. Generally, periodic maintenance is all that's needed (at the end of the season). Otherwise, depending on the frequency of your rides, good pre-ride habits always include checking the following three basic elements: tire pressure (approx. 20psi below max will reduce the risk of punctures and provide a smoother ride); chain lubrication level (a dry chain, just like a sticky chain, needs a little attention!); brake pad alignment (they can be easily adjusted by hand, by centering the wheel between the two pads); *Bonus tip: It's crucial to rinse your bike thoroughly and lubricate mechanical parts after every ride in the rain!*     6) Pack a survival kit... ... and learn how to use it! No one, and no tire, regardless of experience or quality, is 100% immune to punctures during a ride. Equipping your bike with a saddle bag to carry one or two spare tubes, tire levers, a mini pump (or CO2 cartridge), and a set of hex keys (Allen wrenches) are essential items.   7) Saddle adjustment A well-adjusted saddle will prevent the development of pain in several joints and muscles. For a basic adjustment, sit on your bike, feet on the pedals, and try to remain perfectly vertical. To help you, you can use your training stand, or lean one hand against a wall or counter: - With one pedal at 6 o'clock and one leg fully extended, foot flexed at 90 degrees, check that your heel can rest on the pedal. Adjust the saddle height accordingly; - From this point, reduce the saddle height by 1.5 cm; Ride the bike and test the new adjustment. - To fine-tune the adjustment, decrease or increase the height in +/- 3mm intervals. Your adjustment is successful when you can maintain a perfectly still upper body while riding with a fluid pedal stroke. Your saddle is too high if your pelvis sways with each pedal stroke, or conversely, the saddle is too low if you feel increased effort in your thighs!     8) Dress - to be seen Bright colors aren't everyone's cup of tea, but opting for completely subdued and dark clothing decreases your visibility on the road. Without being dressed in fuchsia from head to toe, wearing clothes with noticeable accents can help you avoid trouble with less attentive drivers. Afterwards, equipping your bike with LED lights at the back and front is also a good combination to ensure you are clearly visible.   9) Master basic techniques Three major components need to be considered and, most importantly, mastered during rides: shifting gears, braking, and using cleats! Shifting gears: Getting comfortable with using the shifters while riding slowly can be a good starting point. For smooth shifts, releasing pressure on the pedals allows the derailleur mechanisms to function without chain tension overload. Shifting gears in anticipation of a change in elevation also allows the derailleurs to work better before tension builds up too much. Braking: Here, we mainly want to talk about braking for a stop (at an intersection or traffic light). One principle to integrate is to ride predictably. Initiating a stop in an obvious way for motorists ensures safety for everyone. Conversely, arriving at an intersection and stopping in the last few meters keeps your environment uncertain about your intentions... and one should never underestimate a motorist's eagerness to leave their stopping point (to save 10 seconds on their route). Before coming to a complete stop, take the opportunity to adjust the chain to an easier gear, which will make your start much more pleasant! Using cleats: (or "clipless" pedals in jargon) This is the nemesis that every cyclist must overcome. To differentiate the two components, the pedal is, well, the pedal, and the cleat is the plastic piece attached to the shoe that fits into the pedal. The best way to tame this beast is through practice! To make the task easier, you can reduce the tension via the pedal screw to facilitate cleat entry and exit. Practicing stops and starts can completely change your riding experience, as you'll be able to navigate intersections and lights with confidence! Initiating a stop and "unclipping" BEFORE coming to a complete stop is always a winning strategy. Waiting until the last second might make us feel more "pro," but it's a very fleeting feeling when followed by a fall, even when stationary! Afterwards, gradually increasing the pedal tension will optimize foot support during the pushing phase of the pedal stroke.   10) Be predictable This riding philosophy was mentioned above and is undoubtedly the most important point. It's the foundation of the eternal debate about sharing the road between cyclists and motorists, which is why we save it for last! As a cyclist, it manifests in the ability to ride consistently, without hindering car traffic, and to clearly signal your intentions. In the first case, this means maintaining a straight and consistent line while riding along the edges of the road. Are you riding with company? Judge the density of traffic on the road you are using, and, if necessary, ride in single file. This behavior is reassuring, both for the cyclists accompanying you and for the motorists who will overtake you. When we are reassured, we are calmer and act free from frustration. The same applies to using signals. Ensuring they are clear and executed before the subsequent action makes your behavior on the road predictable. So, whether it's to signal a pothole and then avoid it, or to indicate the direction of a turn and then turn onto a street, remain aware of your surroundings and clearly indicate the action before you commit to ensure a long life on two wheels! Beware of VELCRO!

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR CUSTOM CLOTHING FROM VELCRO? Since 1998, the team of experts at Apogee has been working with several athletes to develop quality products for performance and comfort.The fabrics chosen by our team meet the highest quality standards in manufacturing, but their durability depends on how they are cared for.Garment care begins with understanding the damage that abrasive surfaces can cause to lycra or polyester. _________ VELCROHow do they damage your clothes? The hook-and-loop fastening system is well known in the apparel industry. Many garments require its use, so it is in your best interest to understand how to protect your garments from it.The problem with Velcro is that its  "hooks" easily grip fabrics. Particularly the knits used for speed skating, cross-country skiing, and cycling suits. When the hooks brush against synthetic fibers  (lycra) or polyester, they create abrasion on the fabric. Even a very light contact with Velcro causes the thread to break - a process that results in fiber ends that have pulled away from the fabric surface. It is important to note that Velcro is very likely to damage custom clothing. Indeed, the sublimation process, which colors the fabric on only one side of the fabric, will result in the white fibers of the original fabric showing through when abraded.    TO AVOID Here are some common places where Velcro can be found:  On the cuffs of your jackets, On backpacks On gloves On wrist straps Etc. SOLUTIONS? The best solution is, of course, to avoid Velcro near your clothes and, most importantly, to avoid rubbing them. The suggested prevention is to ensure that both sides of the Velcro are even to avoid contact with other fabrics.  We wanted to inform you of the risks of Velcro and we hope that our advice can prevent damage to your clothes.
